How Oral Surgeons and Dentists Work Together for Your Smile

When experiencing oral health issues, you typically make an appointment with your dentist. General dentists are licensed to provide various services, such as root canals, dentures, and even implants. Sometimes, however, patients present with more complex situations that require more than a minor repair or maintenance care. If this is the case for you, your dentist will likely refer you to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, more commonly referred to as an oral surgeon.

What is an oral surgeon?

An oral surgeon specializes in services such as placing dental implants, bone grafting, removing impacted wisdom teeth and more. Before someone can receive the title of oral surgeon, they must go through extensive education following dental school. After earning a Doctor of Dental Surgery or Dental Medicine, they complete at least four years at a hospital-based surgical residency program. Following this, they must obtain the appropriate state licensure and permits. Some oral surgeons also choose to earn board certification. While it’s not required, a lot of surgeons take this step to demonstrate their advanced expertise and commitment to high standards of care. At OFS, all our surgeons are board-certified!

How will an oral surgeon work with my general dentist?

If your dentist determines that a more specialized approach is needed for your dental concern, they will refer you to an oral surgeon. From there, the oral surgeon will schedule any needed appointments with you to get the treatment you need. After you’ve completed your treatment, be sure to continue seeing your dentist for preventative cleanings to help catch any new dental issues early. By working in partnership, oral surgeons and dentists ensure that you receive comprehensive care, addressing both the functional and aesthetic aspects of your mouth. Their collaboration helps give you a healthier, more confident smile!

If you’re experiencing dental pain or discomfort and aren’t sure if an OMS is needed, schedule an appointment with your dentist today to discuss your options and see if a referral is necessary.
